I’m a professional photographer and lecturer who is enamoured with taking photographs for the sake of it. I have been taking pictures since before I was ten when I realised my Brownie 127 could take colour film. Gratispool provided the raw material. My Ilford 828 gave way to a Halina 135x and served until I became a student and bought my first Pentax S1a. From there to Nikon F2's through Rollei, Hasselblad, Sinar and finally Canon F1's and on beyond to digital.

People remain my favourite subjects although anything which catches my eye whether in street or field goes on film (or card). So there are masses of random images in my vaults…some of which may get seen if and when I get ‘a round tuit’.

To make sure that there is some kind of discipline I purposely practice composition and sometimes develop projects to follow. This has led to exhibitions.
Cartier-Bresson influenced my early years along with Kertesz, Brandt and Capa. Later - William Eggleston, Winogrand, Frank, Freed, Friedlander, Walker Evans, Kane, Gursky, Steele-Perkins, Callahan, and many artists of the 20th century. The cinema often evoked atmospheres that I tried to recreate and compositions in creative European and Japanese films inspired my use of panoramic cameras. The best of journalism never ceases to amaze me and I make a pilgrimage to Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan as often as I can.

I’m truly inspired by the SCC. The members possess technical and artistic skills of which I can only dream. I’m no where near a perfectionist and often, my images fall short of the mark. There is a club ethos which tends towards a beauty of observation, skill and perfection from which I hope to learn.

My own website has more of my images…some commercial and some personal: www.photomills.co.uk
