John Blay

I have been involved with photography ever since a child. My father showed me how to develop and print a B/W film way back in the 1950’s. I first joined Southampton Camera Club in 1961. By this time Donald Herbert, a member and past president of the club had come to live next door to us and during that time, he and his family became good friends. Knowing that I was taking an interest in photography, he encouraged me and showed me some of the simple lighting set ups used in studios. Ever since I have enjoyed working in the studio.

Apart from studio work I like to have a go at most subjects although wild life subjects are of no real interest to me. What gives me a real kick is producing an image whether taken in the studio or outside where I have created the lighting myself or correctly caught the natural light. In the days of mechanical camera’s I owned two Olympus OM1N bodies but when more advanced camera’s came along I switched to Canon and have stayed with them ever since. I now have a Canon 300D and a 5D. Ever since going digital I feel I have been able to learn so much more as I have been able to experiment and carry the experiment right through without having to wait for film to be processed.

Despite the length of time I have done photography and the period I’ve been a member of a camera club and taken part in competitions I’ve always felt most comfortable in the “intermediate” class, as I do not possess a natural “artistic” eye. Over the years some of my work has been published in a variety of magazines and books.
