President's Cup YTD Result 2011:- we operate a points / seal system with images awarded scores of 10, 9.5 or 9 points are automatically eligible for the club website galleries. Seals of Merit are awarded at the discretion of the judge and to a maximum of 5 seals per class. But all competition entrants accumulated point scores go towards their yearend totals which can be seen in the running totals pdf..

Photography Exhibition Southampton Camera Club Annual Members Exhibition at West Quay Shopping Centre - 14-16 October 2011

Southampton Camera Club's held it's annual exhibition of photography at West Quay Shopping Centre in Southampton on Friday 14 October 2011. The club displayed 88 prints that demonstrates a cross section of photography from its members. Subjects included wildlife, portraits, landscapes, and sport photography. This year there was also a special category for local photographs of Southampton.

Club President Mike Lane said: 'We're delighted to be back at West Quay again, for the third year in a row. This year looks like it will be our best exhibition yet, with some excellent photographs that really show what our members can do.'

Warwick PAGB Report from Maurice Pugh SCC Competition Secretary

Southampton Camera Club finished FIRST in the Plate Competition at the PAGB PDI Championships at Warwick on Saturday 16th July after a nail biting tie-break.

We finished on 100 points together with Gwynfa Camera Club from the Welsh Photographic Federation. After a tie break with three extra images Southampton just edged it by one point.

The Championship is held annually in the 550 seat tiered theatre within the Arts Centre complex at Warwick University. This year saw thirty six Clubs entered.  The top finishing eight Clubs from last year, plus twenty eight Clubs from fifteen Federations across Great Britain.

In the competition each club enters 8 images in Rounds 1 and 8 different images in Round 2. The total points from the two rounds decides who goes into the Final and into the Plate. The top eight scoring clubs enter the Final, this year it was ten because of tied marks. The remaining clubs enter the Plate Competition.

There are three judges who score from 2 to 5 for each image. This is done electronically, as per our International. A top scoring image will get 15 points.

After the first two rounds we had scored 163 points, putting us in 29th position. From these two rounds we had only three images that scored well. These were “Leaping Tree Frogs” by Maureen Toft,” Fearless” by Karl Schrader and “Silver-studded Blues mating” by Maurice Pugh.

Clubs in the Plate Competition then had to enter eight images, of which four had to be new images.  We used the three mentioned above together with five new images.  We seemed to be favoured by the marking of the judges with the three images getting higher marks than they did in the earlier rounds.“Jumping tree frogs” received 15 points, “Fearless” received 13 points and “Silver-studded Blues, mating” received 14 points.

Three of our new images did very well, “Kingfisher feeding young” by Pete Whielden scored 14,  “Three Comrades” by Malcolm Niekirk scored 13 and “Going to the dogs” by Karl Schrader scored 12 points.  We finished with 100 points.

When the scores were announced we had tied with Gwynfa CC and had to choose three new images for the tie-break.  Their first image scored 13, our first image scored 9 (a gentle intake of breath or was it a groan came from the audience). Their second image scored 10 and ours scored 12. Then we saw the last image from each club. A 9 from Gwynfa, so a 10 would see us lose, 11 would “go to a penalty shoot-out”  and a 12 would see us the winner. A nail biting pause before the judges score was announced, a 12 and we had won.

What a result after the first two rounds, well done to all the authors who had images selected for the bank of 40. Congratulations to all who made this victory possible.

Our commiserations go to Gwynfa CC, it was a close run thing, well done.

The final placings in the Plate Competition were :- Southampton (100), Gwynfa CC (100), Wolverhampton PS (98), Dorchester and Rolls Royce-Derby (97) and Highcliffe and Infinity (95).

In the Final the winners were Wigan 10, followed by Carluke CC, Amersham PS and Smethwick PS.

Thanks to all who travelled to Warwick, ten members in total with one guest. The largest number that I can remember.  I would like to say a big thank-you to the rest of the selection committee, Alison Cawley, Tony Cook and Pete Smith.

Let us hope that we can get to Warwick again next year.
